HARRY KERR

I am an orchestral violinist and educator with 21 years of professional teaching and performing experience.

I play in the violin section of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and I am concurrently a violin tutor with Music Masters - a music education initiative that provides high quality, long-term musical instrument tuition to children from diverse communities in inner-city primary schools.

Since I graduated from the RCM in 1999, I have toured the world with Britain’s leading orchestras. I am now perfectly suited to take up a tutoring position at the very institution which provided me with this life changing opportunity - and to impart that valuable experience to a new generation of orchestral artists.

Over the years I have encountered myriad teaching and pedagogy methods and have strived to take the most beneficial elements of these systems and to coalesce them into a streamlined and effective teaching method, which is adapted to today’s pace of life and expectation.

I am passionate about high quality music education and have been teaching in state and private schools since I graduated from the Royal College of Music in 1999, alongside my performance career, which has taken me to nearly every major concert hall in the world.

In addition to my school-based work, I have actively participated in education and community outreach projects, belonging to the various orchestras I have been employed by, which has allowed me to bring the life benefits of music education to schools in places as far-flung as India, Gabon, Bermuda and Cyprus, teaching violin to some of the most privileged of pupils and to those from some of the most deprived of backgrounds.

In my spare time, I write adventure novels and have tried my hand at children’s books. I trained as a ballet dancer from the age of 6-18 years and still maintain a keen interest in the art and fundamentally believe in fitness and good posture as a route to the highest standards of music performance - it is also an essential asset in avoiding posture related injury from sustained bouts of orchestral playing, such as can be suffered during major operas.

I have travelled extensively, touring most of India, the Middle and the Far East, the Americas and parts of Africa not to mention extensively throughout Europe both as a professional musician and as an explorer.
